Yagua
Role: Founder & Director
Area: Internet Portals
Dates: 1997-1999 (2y)
Location: Asunción, Paraguay

Garbarino launched Yagua.com in November 1997, which is the country's first search engine and until today, the leading portal in the country. Its success and reach was highly acknowledged by the media.

Garbarino started the company with just one part-time programmer and a contract designer, initially as searchable web directory. By 1999 the company had gown to 10 permanent employees and many contractors, offering an increased range of services; an email directory, classifieds, chat and a news.

Garbarino partnered with Eduardo Baez Balbuena (former ABC Color's chief editor, the country's top selling newspaper), to offer a news service that could compete with the printed press.

Yagua.com's main customers and advertisers included Starmedia and Mixmail (now part of Orange), Microsoft, Wall Street Journal, Diesa S.A. (Volkswagen & Acer Computers), Personal, and Telecel (now Tigo).

In mid 1999, Garbarino sold Yagua.com to Guby Network Inc for an undisclosed sum. In 2000, Yagua.com launched a major radio, TV, and printed media advertising campaign, introducing the new umbrella brand.
